1) Enjoy the town of Hvar
Because of its energy, liveliness and history, the town of Hvar easily attracts thousands of tourists each year.
Its old streets paved in white stone are filled with restaurants, cocktail bars and souvenir shops. Explore the city on foot and get lost in the lively chatter of its cafés and the smell of delicious food. Definitely visit Hvar cathedral to learn about some local history. Spend some time in St. Stephen’s Square to soak up the town’s atmosphere. And don’t forget to try some local food!
Make sure to visit the Španjola Fortress (Hvar Fort). Once a shelter from the Turkish forces, it’s now a great place to take in some breathtaking views of the city’s red roofs, the bay and Pakleni Islands that are just across Hvar town. It’s a great place to take some pics and create precious memories!
2) Take a stroll through time in the Old City/Stari Grad
Ancient Romans were the first to see the beauty and utility of this small sea inlet that provides natural protection for ships. They founded a small town called Faros around 2400 years ago. And even though the ancient town now lies below the ground, a modern one thrives above it. You can start with a peaceful stroll down the palm-lined riva and then explore its cozy streets and squares. If you’re a history lover, take some time to visit the Stari Grad plains – a UNESCO World Heritage site full of Roman and Greek artifacts.
If, or when, you get hungry, know that Stari Grad has some amazing seafood restaurants. Oh, and the prices are a bit more friendly than in Hvar town. So make sure to take advantage of that – go to a wine tasting or try some local ice cream. Try the lavender flavor, you won’t regret it! So, if you feel like exploring some urban vibes, like the ones in Hvar and Stari Grad, there are some really great day trips from Split to Hvar.
3) Enjoy the sea at Dubovica Beach
Not far from Hvar town, there is a picturesque little cove called Dubovica. It used to be a place where local nobles would retreat for their summer getaway. The remnants of their vacation home still stand there – looking over the famous pebbled beach.
The clear blue sea is perfect for a refreshing afternoon swim. There is some shade on the beach but if you can’t find any, you can always rent out a parasol or two. And of course, local restaurants will take care of your hunger. The beach is snorkeling friendly so don’t forget to bring your stuff for some underwater fun! Oh, and pssst! You may even find a hidden cave somewhere around here, if you dare to look…
So, if you’re looking for a leisurely exploration (you’re on vacation after all!), think about spending some time lounging on the Dubovica beach.
4) Admire the Red Rocks
Now, here’s a gem for all you nature lovers!
Red Rocks (Crvene stijene) are a natural formation of vertically separated red limestone rocks just dropping into the sea. Millenia of rain and sea waves carved unique shapes and forms into the rock, revealing its red insides. A clear blue sea and a bright red rock make for a unique swimming experience. Very instagrammable, in fact, if that’s your deal.
There’s also a small cave and a pebbled beach just waiting for you to discover them. And if you want to spice up your experience a bit more, why not try cliff jumping? The Red Rocks go as high as 15 m, or about 50 feet, above the sea level. How’s that for some adrenaline rush? If you take a guided boat tour with a local, they will surely be able to show you the safest place for cliff jumping!
5) Cruise the Pakleni Islands on your day trips from Split to Hvar
This dreamy archipelago of 19 small islands is a must see!
It’s located just across the town of Hvar and can be easily seen from the Španjola fortress. There are dozens of turquoise bays, coves and inlets to explore and hidden beaches to discover. Of course, it’s best to go by boat. Especially if you have a local with you who can show you the best places for swimming and snorkeling.
A visit to Pakleni islands is one of the best day trips from Split to Hvar that you can take, especially if you pair it with Hvar town. This way you can first explore the town and then relax on a cruise among the islands – the wind and the sea will surely drive off the heat!
6) Chillax at Laganini Bar and Hula Hula Bar
Nature and history are all fine, but maybe you’re always in search of the next best party. If that’s the case, why not visit some of the local beach bars and party houses? One of them is known as the biggest dance floor in the area!
You can start off your afternoon at Laganini Bar in Pakleni Islands. Cozy chairs, friendly waiters and cocktail masters, the sound of the sea… It’s impossible not to relax while sipping cocktails right next to a beach!
Hula Hula bar on Hvar island is one of the best places to watch the sun go down and meet new people. Enjoy this peace of heaven, its great music and even better cocktails and food. Sounds good? Pack your fancy swimsuit and book your boat tour with locals!
